Cartmill Clan

It's been many years since a Cartmill family reunion has taken place. If my memory serves me right, the last reunion I recall was held at the Blue Licks State Park sometime in the 1970s.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, several Cartmill decedents gathered at my sister and brother in-laws home in Montgomery County.

Uncle Robbie is the only living child of our grandparents, James Eugene and Gladys Toy Cartmill.

Children of James and Gladys are Shirley Gene, Betty Mae, Mary Katherine, Virginia, Patricia, Jerry Wayne, James Jr. and Rob.

Cartmill grandchildren-Greg, Jamie Cartmill, Teresa, Libby Myers, Lisa, Claudia, Dwayne, Kim, April, William Hawkins, Gina, Darin, Barry Williams, Angie, Eric Willeroy, Devin Cartmill, Rebecca Cartmill.

It would fall on one of the sons of our late cousin Jamie to continue the Cartmill surname in our family line.

Some of the Cartmill Crew getting ready to be hauled around the hillside of Mike and Lisa's farm to take a look at a site where an old log cabin once stood.

Angies husband, Tommy, drove the tractor to haul us up and down some really steep hills. I think we all truly enjoyed the beautiful country side.

Standing at the top are Angie Willeroy Fern, Barry Williams, Mike Runnels, Gina Williams Runnels, John Douglas Catchings, Lisa Hawkins McGuire, Dickie Hawkins, Sitting at the back of wagon, John and Claudia Hawkins Catchings, Kim Hawkins King. Standing in front, third from left, in purple shirt is our grandfathers first cousin, Patsy Cartmill. Next is Gina's son Brock, Karen Patrick Cartmill and Robbie Cartmill. Soon as I get the correct names of Patsy's children, standing next to her, and the lady in the foreground, I will edit this photo to add their names.

Lisa McGuire, Gina Runnels and Angie Fern standing where an old log cabin once stood.
The cabin is completely gone, but a few rocks from the old chimney are still there.
Gina, Barry, and Darin Williams are the children of Patricia (Trish) Cartmill and Danny Williams.
Angie and Eric Willeroy are the children of Virginia (Ginny)Cartmill and John Willeroy
Lisa, Kim and Claudia Hawkins are the children of Mary Cartmill and Dickie Hawkins.

We really missed our siblings and cousins that were not able to attend the reunion, William Hawkins, April Hawkins Rogers, Darin Williams, Eric Willeroy, Devin Cartmill, Libby Myers and Greg Cartmill.
Always sadly missed and remembered are Dwayne Hawkins, Teresa Myers, Rebecca Cartmill and Jamie Cartmill.

In the picture below, Virginia Cartmill Willeroy, Mary Katherine Cartmill Hawkins, Betty Mae Cartmill Meyers and Shirley Gene Cartmill. I am not sure but I think the photo may have been taken when they lived in Camargo, Ky.

Surviving children by the second marriage are Alice, wife of Ewell Payne of near Stepstone, Miss Lida, teaching school at Wyoming, and William, Deputy Sheriff of this town. Mr.Tipton came to this town about 42 years ago to follow  his trade as a blacksmith. To know him was to like him and such was his geniality and friendly goodwill to all that his acquaintanceship was widely extended and his friends and well-wishers innumerable. He was a good man indeed, warm-hearted, generous and jovial. He will be much missed by the older generation that knew him so long and held him in such genuine esteem. Until his health broke down he was for many years an officer and active worker in the Christian Church here in Owingsville.

Robert Letcher Tipton is listed in the 1876 & 1886 Owingsville Business Directory as a Blacksmith.
I wonder where our great great grandfathers blacksmith shop was located.

I wonder if the blacksmith shop listed in an article written by Rob Kiskaden, about the 1993 Owingsville fire could be that of our great great grandfather's.

A large lumber yard owned by the E. V. Brother Lumber Company was located at the intersection of Oberline and Water Street, at the present location of the old Foodland Grocery Store once owned by Donnie Manuel. Businesses along Henry and Jefferson Streets included the Peed & Hazelrigg stables, located at the present day location of Jamie’s Dance Studio and the former Gateway Video building, a blacksmith and wagon shop, a grocery store, dentist office and several storage sheds and barns.

A newspaper clipping reported that R.L. Tipton's loss was $450 dollars in damage.
It seems I saw a map someplace online that shows the business locations. I will try to locate that information and add it to the blog soon.

In the Bethel 1884 Business directory there is a J.B. Tipton listed as a blacksmith, and could very well be Robert and Eva Lou's son, James B.
